Historias de la familia, amor, aventuras, y desventuras dichas por la gente de nuestro país
On Saturday, Jul. 11 the Voces de Nuestro País event and podcast will feature brothers Joseph and Ricky León. The Brothers will share stories of growing up in Cerro, NM and experiences from their careers. From simpler times, the brothers grew up farming and ranching, living on the acequia, helping with Leon’s store/bar and Texaco station, and experiencing loss at a young age. They will share antics from their youth and today, their dedication to family and contributions to the community of Cerro. Joseph will also talk about his career with his Federal Government in two National Forests (Carson and Gila), one National Monument (Gila Cliff Dwellings),
DOD (White Sands Missile Range), and Bureau of Land Management (Las Cruces, Santa Fe, and Wild Rivers).
Our eleventh session featured Erica Vigil Flores and Jada Lew with “Redemios de Nuestra Tierra” – remedies from our land, traditional knowledge of the Earth, plants, and their power to heal. The event took place on Jun. 20,
after this newspaper’s submission deadline. Look for highlights from that gathering in the Aug. issue.
Voces de Nuestro País ~ Voices of Our Area are monthly story gatherings celebrating local voices and culture. Featured local guests share stories of family, community, history, love, work, adventures, and misadventures. Each event is recorded and released as an audio and video podcast on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Amazon Music; search “Voces de Nuestro País.” By sharing these stories virtually, we hope to extend and multiply the sense of community connection that is felt during the live gatherings. Please tell your friends and family!
Michael Rael is MC and curator for these monthly gatherings and podcast episodes, hosted in collaboration with Questa Library and Voices of the Northern Rio Grande, a program of local nonprofit, Localogy. Audio recordings, videos, and images from “Voces de Nuestro País” events are also added to the growing digital community archive, a local repository and resource established by Voices of the Northern Rio Grande and Questa Public Library with support from the Manitos Community Memory Project. Learn more about the community archive and listen to stories from community members at QuestaStories.org.
