OPPOSITIONS

“We are always seeking our opposite whether we know it or not. When we discover what that is we can dissolve our arrogance.” Michio Kushi

New Moons and Full Moons are great times to experience oppositions and one reason why they are so powerful.

The full moon this month incorporates the Aries – Libra axis meaning that the Sun is in one sign while the Moon is in its opposite. New Moons do the same thing with Earth on the opposite side of the Sun-Moon conjunction.

Oppositions are an important part of astrology, neither an out-and-out challenge nor a blessing, but something meant to expose problems to bring out the best of each. They are always complementary. The qualities of the first six signs, located on the bottom half of the wheel are meant to grow into the qualities of their opposites on the top half. The tug of war is a great metaphor for the opposition, explaining what feels like strain or stress but which is meant to improve muscle, lung power and stamina. If one side becomes unbalanced by an excess of focus, paying attention to the opposition can offset that imbalance. Opposites indicate the direction, the meaning and the purpose of the other.

We recently completed the Virgo – Pisces Axis. Virgo is the last of the bottom half of the zodiac, the 6th sign, while Pisces is the last of all 12 signs. Now we can start over on higher levels. Libra is the first sign of the upper level while Aries is the first sign of the entire zodiac. The shift is from two of our most sensitive and compassionate signs – Pisces and Virgo, to two of our strongest, most assertive signs. Aries and Libra are willing to take the first step forward, to lead the planet and to create anew; one with certainty, one with discrimination. We hope and expect that we have learned something by coming through the softer axis of Pisces – Virgo and can see the steps we need to take to create our world anew, in compassionate and more tolerant ways.
