Climates

In the cool mountain air of Red River, a local staple sits along Main Street. Climates, located at 307 E. Main St. has been a go-to gift shop since 2009, but its story began decades ago. Owners Krista and Justin Brandenburg have a long and storied history in Red River as both business and property owners.

Krista, a lifelong Red River native, and her husband Justin, whose family arrived in the area in 1859, seem destined for this path. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Krista’s father owned and ran “The Mountain Shop” in the very same location where Climates stands today. Krista started dabbling at the shop at just 9 years old, gaining invaluable, hands-on experience. “I’d be hanging out with my parents and learning the ropes of owning and running a business,” she shared.

This early education continued after college at Texas Tech, when her father presented her with an opportunity to lease and eventually purchase the family-owned Gold Nugget and later The Mountain Shop in 1997. Krista took the opportunity and hasn’t looked back.

In 2007, an electrical fire destroyed The Mountain Shop but instead of giving up, the Brandenburgs saw an opportunity for a new beginning. They started from scratch, with Justin and his crew designing and rebuilding the new store. With its log cabin style and high vaulted ceilings, Krista named the new store Climates, and it opened its doors in May 2009. The new space allowed them to expand their offerings with items like camp gear and outdoor items to cater to the unique needs of the mountain town. Climates absolutely lives up to its name, providing gear for all four seasons with popular items like Red River t-shirts, clothing, and shoes.

Krista’s expertise as a business owner and her talent for customer service is immediately apparent, making every visitor feel like a long-time friend. Her success as a business woman is a reflection of her business philosophy. When asked what it takes for your business to thrive in Red River, her answer was simple: “You have to be here and be present, and you have to respect your employees.” Her expertise in customer service shines through every detail of the store, and her ability to nurture her staff’s strengths has led to remarkable employee loyalty, with some having been with her for 15 years.

This dedication to quality extends to the products she sells. Climates offers a curated selection of fashionable clothing, accessories, and unique gifts. The store features popular brands known for their comfort and style, including Ethyl, Teva, Chaco, and Oofos. Customers can also find high-quality flip-flops from Olukai, cozy Lazy One pajamas, and accessories from Groove Life.

Recognizing the love for pets in the community, the store also has a special section for “fur families,” offering treats, toys, and pet tags.

Krista expressed immense pride in her business, her partnership with Justin, and her relationship with her dedicated staff. She also takes pride in offering a discount to all military, police, and firefighters as a small token of gratitude. Locals also get a 10% discount.

At Climates you can find a gift for everyone in your life—and a little something for yourself, too. Stop by and see why Climates has been a local favorite for years. Their hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. everyday.
