Ownership Shift For Taos County’s Free Spay/Neuter Clinic

Taos County’s first free spay and neuter clinic, originally established by Donna Karr and Taos Feral Feline Friends, has reached a milestone, performing over 2,700 procedures since opening its doors in May of 2024.
With new ownership—the nonprofit Spay Taos!—the clinic is entering a new chapter. Spay Taos! is dedicated to reducing pet overpopulation.

The facility, located at 36 Highway 522 in El Prado, across from Taos Veterinary Clinic, offers services for both dogs and cats—including feral cats—and provides microchips and vaccinations, all at no cost.
Karr will continue to serve as executive director and Spay Taos! will take responsibility for clinical operations. A team of three paid professionals: a licensed veterinarian and two technicians—alongside a group of volunteers, ensures that the clinic runs efficiently.

In addition to a leadership transition, the clinic has implemented a revised scheduling system that has helped reduce the cost per surgery from $149 to $118, without sacrificing the number of animals treated.
Appointments can be scheduled online at spaytaos.org or by calling (575) 240-8549. Donations to support the clinic’s mission can also be made through the website. All services remain entirely free to residents of Taos County and surrounding areas.
