Tierra Wood Stove: Community Legacy

Tierra Wood Stoves and Window Coverings has been keeping Taos-area residents warm since April 1980. Originally owned and operated by Bob Bishop for 44 years, the business is now under the leadership of Della Coca, a longtime employee and familiar face to many customers.

Coca began working at Tierra Wood Stoves in 1997 as a sales representative. With previous sales experience, she quickly developed a passion for the industry. “Working together for that many years, you become like a family,” Coca said. That spirit still defines the business, now located at 1519 Paseo Del Pueblo Sur, where customers are greeted warmly and can browse a showroom stocked with high-end wood and gas stoves, along with window coverings from Hunter Douglas.

Bishop, originally from Denver, moved to Taos in 1980 and launched Tierra Wood Stoves during a time when wood heat stoves were the only option. As demand for gas fireplaces grew, the store adapted, offering a wider selection. When Coca joined the team, Bishop mentored her closely. Together, they built a reputation for strong customer service and product expertise.

A Taos native, Coca officially became the owner just over a year ago. She now runs the business with the same commitment to quality and customer satisfaction she developed under Bishop’s guidance. “If you’re looking for a wood or gas stove, we have everything you need to get it into your home. From the pipes and chimneys to all accessories and installation, we’ve got you covered,” Coca said. “Our installers of both stoves and fireplaces as well as window coverings are very professional and knowledgeable. Our goal is to make sure our customers are happy. I invite all our customers to call if they have any questions about an item they purchased here and we’ll make sure to get them the help they need.”

Family remains a cornerstone of the business. Coca’s daughter-in-law, Jessica Cordova, is a key part of the team, and her grandson, Diego Cordova, also works at the store. Coca speaks proudly of her son, Ivan Lujan, and granddaughter Mila Rae, underscoring the family-focused values at the heart of the business.

The current staff includes Bishop, Coca, Jessica Cordova, Terrance Vigil, Diego Cordova, Jonah Bishop, Lawrence Vigil, and Ted Strouhal. The showroom is carefully curated, with displays that feature well-known stove brands such as Morso, Regency, Pacific Energy, Vermont Castings, Hearthstone, FPX, Lopi, ASTRIA, Marquis, and Jøtul.
Tierra Wood Stoves is the oldest continuously owned wood stove retailer in New Mexico and remains one of the state’s largest. Coca and Bishop continue to focus on creating a positive experience for every customer. “You tell me what you want and we’ll make it happen,” Coca said.

Financing options include a traditional layaway program and a 12-month, a zero percent interest plan with no early payoff penalties. Measuring and installation services for window coverings are offered at no cost.
“Safety and quality are the most important things to us and we are always looking for ways to help our customers,” Coca said.

Tierra Wood Stoves is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call (575) 758-9880.
