They did it! The Questa Cheer team took back the A-2A State Title at the 2025 Spirit Competition in Albuquerque on Friday, March 21 at the UNM Pit! The team had a grand send-off on Thursday, March 20, with locals lining the streets, waving, and honking to wish the team good luck as they headed to state. Local law enforcement and first responders led the send-off, with loud sirens echoing throughout the village.
The team did two routines, first a game day routine with a variation of Cupid’s Shuffle played in a concert band music genre. Flags waved with the letters “C-A-T-S” in perfect synchronization as members cheered on the crowd with signs and megaphones, as the crowd shouted back “First and Ten, Go Fight Win!” The synchronization, stunts, kicks, and flips were impeccable throughout this performance.
In the second routine was Cheer with Music, a much more challenging and complex number. The team brought their A-game, showing their hunger to take back the state title through the music selection. “These kids are hungry now, Questa’s ready to take that red trophy and turn it blue, and there’s not a single thing that anyone can do,” was the remix in the song leading into the remix “N’s in Paris” by Jay-Z and Kanye West.
Last year, the team took second place, bringing Questa a red trophy, showing they were ready to take the first-place blue trophy back home. The team also mixed in No Scubs by TLC, Abracadabra by Eminem, Bounce Back by Big Sean, and Be Humble by Kendrick Lamar. Incorporating flags, signs, stunts, and signs, the team left it all on the mat.
The team took first place, their fifth state title in the past decade. The team was back-to-back state champs in the 2022-23 season. On Saturday, Feb. 1 of this year, the Wildcat Cheer team traveled to Albuquerque to compete in the Spirit of Hope Challenge at Tingley Coliseum. The team placed first in High School 1A-3A Game Day performance. The following weekend, cheer teams from across the state traveled to Capital High School in Santa Fe to compete in the Rumble in the Jungle Varsity Cheer Competition. The local Questa Wildcat Cheer team again placed first in both Game Day and Cheer with Music. On Saturday, Feb. 15, the team headed to their third cheer competition at the Santa Fe Demon Invitational. The team placed first in Game Day and Cheer with Music categories.
“It’s an amazing feeling. This team has worked really hard and they were determined to bring it back. We told them in the tunnel that no matter the outcome, we are extremely proud of them and everything they have done this year,” says head coach Maria Medina. “I hope by our team doing this and bringing back the state title, cheer will start being recognized and treated like a sport.”
