Wildcats Boys Baseball Plays Hard At District

The Questa Wildcats baseball team has been working hard all season. They have had some big wins and some tough games, but they are not giving up.

On April 2, the Wildcats played two games against Mesa Vista and won both in a big way—21-0 and 16-5. In the first game, senior Carlos Ortega hit a home run and brought in three runs. Juniors Ricardo Leon and Noah Rael added four more runs together. Rael also hit a home run, and the team stole 12 bases. Ortega was also the pitcher and struck out nine players without giving up any runs.

In the second game, the Wildcats scored 15 runs in just the first two innings! Leon hit two home runs and had three RBIs (runs batted in), Rael hit another home run, and Joquin Martinez hit a triple and helped bring in two more runs. The team stole 11 more bases, and Rael and Remington Smith struck out 10 players.

After those big wins, the Wildcats had some hard games. They lost both games to McCurdy on April 11 and again on April 17. On April 15, they lost one game to Peñasco but won the second one 19-6. On April 21, they beat Mora 15-5 in the first game but lost the second one 17-13.

Right now, the Wildcats have won 6 games and lost 11. They have 4 wins and 6 losses in their district. They still have six more games to play and hope to win most of them to try and make it to the state playoffs.

The team is strong when they run fast and steal bases. Their pitchers—Ricardo Leon, Carlos Ortega, and Noah Rael—are very important to winning. The defense also needs to play well. Seniors Aliyah Santistevan, Carlos Ortega, and James Garcia, along with juniors Leon and Rael, are leading the team.

The Wildcats played Mesa Vista again on April 24, Mora on April 28, and their last home game was against Peñasco on May 1 on Parent Appreciation Day.

The team and Coach Ricardo Leon are hoping to finish the season strong and make it to the New Mexico State Tournament.
