Questa Track Ends Season With State Champion Among Ranks

The Ladycats delivered a strong performance at the state meet, finishing as the only Taos County team to break into the top 10 in Class 2A. They earned 27 points, edging out Oak Grove Classical Academy by four.
Questa junior Alyse Lovato earned a state medal in the triple jump and placed in three other events to finish fourth in the individual standings at the Class 2A state track and field championships.


Lovato recorded a jump of 34 feet, 7.25 inches in the triple jump, finishing well ahead of Tucumcari senior Aubrianna French, who posted a mark of 31-03.75. She went on to claim silver in the long jump with a leap of 16-01.00, narrowly trailing Capitan’s Faith Thomas, who won the event at 16-05.00
Lovato also took fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.99, just two-hundredths of a second off her preliminary time of 1:00.97. She placed fifth in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 27.85 seconds.


Questa senior Alianna Gonzalez earned a third-place finish in the triple jump at the Class 2A state championships with a 31-foot effort, edging Legacy Academy’s Cheyenne Gonzales by nearly two inches (30-08.25).


Gonzalez also took silver in the pole vault with a 9-foot jump, surpassing Capitan’s Willa Nelson on her second-best attempt.


The Questa boys track and field team finished 20th overall at the Class 2A state championships, tying with Cloudcroft High School with four points.


Freshman Larry Roybal placed sixth in the shot put, competing against mostly upperclassmen, with a throw of 42 feet, 6.5 inches. In the javelin, sophomore Jacovo Cardenas earned a fourth-place finish with a mark of 135-03.
