BODY MIND SPIRIT: December

Why Have We Come Here?

While leafing through some of the many personal journals I have written over the years, I noticed the varied experiences expressed in my writing. Then I came upon words written on the edge of a page in a journal from 1996: Why have we come here? So, I have taken to heart those words and asked myself that very question. Of course, it would be impossible to list everything, but it has been a sweet self-assignment and perhaps some of my readers will choose to take on the same exploration. If you do, I know you will enjoy the journey.

Here is an offering of a few things that have come to heart and mind:
We have come to touch the ground of earth. To feel the cool grass under our feet or to sink our toes into the warm sand; to hike the trails and sit by the mountain lakes and the coastal oceans.

We have come to embrace the trees and plants, to see the wonder of their strength, beauty, purpose, and know that they are living beings that communicate within their own kind and with us. If we take the time, we can hear them in our imaginations.

We have come to see the moonlit sky with a lace of stars throughout and around it. To see a sunny day with drifting clouds and a brightly lit azure, blue sea above us. To see a sunrise, a sunset and feel the stirring awe in the heart and soul.
We have come to smell the air after a rainfall on a summer’s day or perhaps in the early morning dawn. To watch the snowfall and catch a flake as it tumbles to earth. To know the wind, the storms and the upheavals of weather patterns as the seasons change. To sit by a fireplace in winter or bask in the sun on a summer day.

We have come to touch one another – To wrap our arms around a friend or beloved and hold them close in love and affection. To be caring and compassionate. To do unto others as we would have others do unto us.
We have come to embrace family life, birthing and rearing children, gathering on special occasions. We have come to laugh and cry together when life calls it forth.

We have come to listen to the sounds of life: children playing, wind in the trees, music, laughter or the voice of love. To listen carefully when called upon to hear a friend in need.

We have come to dance and sing, to cry and mourn, to live and die, to create and explore, to love and embrace all that comes our way as it brings us deeper into ourselves and brushes away the refuse of resistance.

We have come to see the ocean blue, the fish, the whales and the dolphins too. The animal kingdom upon the land under the care of the human hand. To know that all beings of life are of the same creator as us and to treat all life with kindness and caring.

We have come to hold babies and kittens and pups that open our hearts more to the light of love. To see the preciousness of life in all that is.

We have come to know we are more than this form of body and mind. That we are part of a far greater creative force. We have come to be Light on the path home, Once again.

We have come to love and be loved.
