Would you like to learn more about anaerobic vs. aerobic exercise, weight training, cardiovascular training, circuit training, HIT training, body weight training, diet, and much more? This month’s column gives you basic information on a few types of exercise.
Anaerobic exercise consists of quick short bursts of energy which last from 8 to 10 seconds, such as a sprinter running very short distances.
Aerobic exercise consists of energy lasting approximately two minutes, such as a mid-distance runner’s exertion.
Weight training consists of exercises in which the muscle contracts under tension for a certain amount of time.
Cardiovascular training is another word for aerobic training, but which uses much more of the internal organs such as the heart, lungs, and circulatory system. Such exercises as swimming, brisk walking, long-distance jogging, and dancing are forms of cardio training.
Circuit training consists of utilizing different forms of exercise that include resistance, aerobic, and strength in which you have a certain number of exercises to perform in a specific, usually short period of time. You move from one exercise to the next with little or no rest time until you have completed all exercises.
High intensity training (HIT) is a form of strength training that involves good quality repetitions of weight to the point of failure. High intensity interval training (HIIT) consists of short periods of intense exercise with brief recovery rest time. Usually HIIT exercises will last no longer than 20 seconds and the rest period lasts no longer than 10 seconds.
These are some of the topics of health and fitness that will be discussed in this monthly column, Fitness For All. Send us any feedback, questions, comments or any additional information you may want us to discuss in our articles. No matter what type of exercise you engage in, always consult your physician to make sure the exercise regimen is safe for you to participate in.
