Following the ongoing federal government closing, Kit Carson Electric Co-op is being recognized for its efforts to support local families affected by furloughs and lost paychecks.
During the closing, the Taos-based co-op suspended disconnections for federal employees and offered bill payment assistance through its Members Helping Members Program. The co-op also partnered with the Taos Community Foundation to provide grocery gift cards to eligible workers.
Luis Reyes Jr, CEO of KCEC, said the effort reflects the cooperative’s long-standing commitment to helping its members through difficult times. “We know our members are our neighbors,” Reyes said. “When our community faces hardship, we step up to make sure no one is left without essential services.”
The initiative provided temporary relief for federal employees in Taos and surrounding counties, helping them stay connected and supported until government operations resumed.
Kit Carson Electric Cooperative serves members across Taos, Colfax and Rio Arriba counties. More information about the Members Helping Members Program is available by calling (575) 751-9064 or emailing csr@kitcarson.com
