Five Tibetan Rites – A Path to Growing Younger
Over two decades ago, I discovered the Five Tibetan Rites of Rejuvenation through a book by Peter Kelder. At the time, I was developing a program to reverse memory loss and early signs of Alzheimer’s. I began practicing the Rites daily alongside other anti-aging routines, and they’ve since become a cornerstone of my youthfulness program.
Often referred to simply as “The Five Tibetans,” these ancient movements are more than just physical exercises—they’re a holistic practice that energizes body, mind, and spirit. By activating key chakras (energy centers), the Rites stimulate the endocrine system, which governs everything from metabolism to aging. In this way, they support the health of all our organs and systems. While they share similarities with Indian yoga traditions, the Five Tibetans stand apart as a unique and powerful path to vitality.
I also enjoy Chair Yoga and Gentle Yoga at Yoga Sala in Questa on Monday and Wednesday mornings—gentle complements to the dynamic energy of the Rites.
Developed by Tibetan lamas as a spiritual and physical discipline, the Five Tibetans were introduced to the West in 1939 when Peter Kelder published “The Eye of Revelation”, later retitled “The Ancient Secret of the Fountain of Youth”. Kelder learned of the Rites from a retired British army colonel who had traveled extensively through India and Tibet.
To help others learn the correct form, I’ve posted a demonstration video on YouTube. Just search “FIVE TIBETANS – ELLEN WOOD” to find it.
I’m also thrilled to announce the release of my new spiral-bound book, Five Tibetan Rites – The Right Way, designed to be easy to use and accessible to all. I warmly invite you to join me for a book signing at the Questa Library on Saturday, September 27, at 2 p.m. Refreshments will be served!
Research into long-lived populations shows that staying physically active well into our later years is key to health and vitality. As most doctors will agree “movement is medicine”. The only unusual thing about my practice is that it’s over 2,500 years old.
As with any new exercise routine, please proceed with care. If you’re new to yoga or similar practices, it’s wise to consult your doctor before beginning.
