Photo by Spencer Warnock: QUINZEES! Fifth and sixth-grade Alta Vista students made a quinzee snow shelter for their Wilderness Skills Class, taught by Mr. Spencer Warnock. This class offers students a hands-on, experiential approach to learning wilderness skills, animal tracking, and nature observation. For this project students piled snow and tunneled an entrance into the shelter. They learned that even the cold snow can be an ally for protection from the elements! A quinzhee or quinzee /'kwinzi:/ is a Canadian snow shelter that is made from a large pile of loose snow which is shaped then hollowed.
