Why Have We Come Here?
The holiday season is here and there is so much ado about the world and this wonderful place we call home. The tensions on social media and mainstream news are a flurry of “breaking news” about this or that, and sometimes this input into our lives can cause upsets in our outlook on life. Most of us are aware that it is not always easy to avoid being caught up in the negativity spewed out by the media.
Without realizing how useful it could become, I started another journal dedicated to my favorite things. It all began one day when I was having difficulty processing news about a large, unexpected expense. As I moved through the day, I realized my thinking was taking me down a road I knew would only move me deeper into negativity. I took a moment to sit quietly and closed my eyes. In that time, I began thinking about the things and events in life that make me happy, my favorite things.
After indulging in these wonderful thoughts and memories, I opened my eyes and was pleased that my negative mental trend had shifted toward a lighthearted feeling and a trust in the process of life.
Since that time, I have written down in my journal those memories that bring a smile to my face and make my heart sing. Some are small and some are large. Some make me cry with gratitude and some make me laugh with a light heart. Here are a few entries– varying from sounds, tastes, experiences, people, places and things– that I have written. – “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by IZ, Belinda Point in Ft. Bragg, California, peach pie, a snowy day tucked in by the fireplace. I think you get the idea. As you discover one favorite thing, it usually leads to another. It is fun, it is rewarding, and it is very helpful if you’re feeling low.
Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens – Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens – Brown paper packages tied up with strings – These are a few of my favorite things.
Cream-colored ponies and crisp apple strudels – Doorbells and sleigh bells, and schnitzel with noodles. – Wild geese that fly with the moon on their wings – These are a few of my favorite things.
Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes – Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes – Silver white winters that melt into spring – These are a few of my favorite things.
When the dog bites – When the bee stings – When I’m feeling sad – I simply remember my favorite things – And then I don’t feel so bad. by Rogers and Hammerstein
Wishing you all a lighthearted, love-filled holiday and many of your favorite things.
