Local Man Reported Missing, Found Dead

Daniel (Danny) Martinez, 75 of Questa, New Mexico was reported missing on February 21. He was last seen at the Alta Gas Station in Costilla at 11:30 a.m., headed northbound on 522. Daniel resided in Garcia, Colorado at the time of his disappearance and his wife had no knowledge of his whereabouts.

The Costilla County Sheriff’s Office issued a missing person Facebook post on the February 22, including Danny’s physical characteristics, advising the public that Danny was a diabetic and in need of medication. Many Questa locals took to social media, pleading with the community to be on the lookout for him. Groups of people joined together in search parties, looking for Danny in the southern Colorado and northern New Mexico area.

On Saturday, February 24, Danny’s family reported that his truck had been located in the San Luis Valley area, however, he still remained missing. According to his family, a Silver Alert had been issued for Danny. These alerts are a public notification system in to broadcast information about missing persons online and to the media– especially senior citizens with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or other mental disabilities or medical conditions– in order to aid in locating them.

On Sunday, February 25, Danny’s presumptive remains were located near the same location where his truck was found. His cause of death will be determined by the coroner.
